  1. Mort looked at the faces gathered around the Christmas table. Smiling, carefree, blithe. "Yet," he thought, "even in Arcadia am I." Took out the whetstone and ran it one more time along the blade of his scythe.

  4. The farmer's wife looked along the keen edge of the scythe's blade. She could see the faint traces of an inscription etched along its length. She squinted, trying to make it out. Slowly, gradually, the words swam into existence before her gaze :
