  3. Galliard (adj.) : Description applied to themselves by sailors aboard the Spanish Armada, as it sailed en route to England. "Come and fight with us, if you think you're galli'ard enough!" (attr. to Commodore Gonzales). Appellation fell into disuse after most of the Spanish galleons were dispatched by the ships of Francis Drake, who really WAS 'ard enough.
